ABOUT THE JPNDC
The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation
was founded in 1977 to work closely with neighborhood residents,
organizations and businesses to plan and carry out community development
projects that benefit low-income residents of Jamaica Plain. Our mission is
to revitalize Jamaica Plain as a healthy, diverse, and sustainable
neighborhood through a comprehensive strategy of community empowerment,
economic development, and affordable housing development.
Our approach is rooted in the belief that the active
involvement of community members is absolutely critical to the success of our
programs. Resident input and control is built in through participatory
planning processes, the integration of community organizing into economic and
housing projects, and leadership development. Active project advisory
committees involve those residents whose lives are most affected by the
problems we seek to address.
Since our founding the JPNDC has become one of the most
successful non-profit community development corporations (CDCs) in the
state. We have developed more than 415 units of housing and created more
than 1000 jobs. More than 500 JPNDC members play an active role in our work.
Our work to revitalize the Hyde/Jackson neighborhood was recognized in 2000
by the National Community Development Initiative and in 2002 (with City
Life/Vida Urbana and the Hyde Square Task Force) by the United Way of
Massachusetts Bay. In 2003, the JPNDC was one of three organizations
spotlighted by the Rockefeller Foundation for innovative programs in
workforce development. Click here for a timeline of our first 25
years or a tour of our development projects.
Our continued success relies on many community members
who are rallying to ensure that Jamaica Plain remains a community that
welcomes people from all backgrounds, providing safe, affordable housing and
opportunities for economic success.
